Project Development and Institutional Strengthening
(Initiated in the Rehearsing Change program)
We have been working with the Nina Shunku Association for 2 years via our Rehearsing Change program. In May 2016 we began a 2 year long project that addresses obstacles that plague almost all small non-profit organizations: sustainability. Via a micro investment and a series of workshops, the goal was to create a structured platform from which the members of this amazing collective could address basic conflicts in organizational communication and planning. The funds are being converted into small community-based outreach programs and micro-enterprises, including a small cafeteria that opens on weekends and a silk-screening business. The outreach programs help practice institutional communication and organization while simultaneously bringing urban arts programs to hundreds of local community members. To date, only half the funds have been invested, yet via the micro-enterprises, Nina Shunku has already more than doubled their coffers.
This project has evolved to include Nina Shunku's sister organization, Mundo Circo, which has also accessed funds and worked on community outreach in some of Quito's most marginalized neighborhoods.
Direct beneficiaries: 14 association members; Indirect beneficiaries: Approximately 500 community members.
Note: Nina Shunku's incredible successes in this project and their participation in 2 semesters of Rehearsing Change has led us to contracting them for various other programs and projects.
